Running a monthly review

What you can ask

The questions Morevy answers, and the ones it will not.

Morevy responds to plain language. There is no query syntax to learn. This page sets out the surface area so you are not left inferring it from examples.

Closing a period

Ask

Returns

Close February

The full close for that period: opening balance, movement, closing balance, reconciliation.

Close the most recent month you can

Morevy selects the latest period your file supports.

Close January, then February, then March

Closes run one month at a time; a quarter means asking for each month in turn.

Understanding the movement

Ask

Returns

What drove the movement?

The largest contributors, with the figures behind them.

Break that down by plan

The same movement, once per value of a column the file supports as a lens. Where a column will not work, Morevy names the ones that will.

Who stopped paying, and what did each cost?

The individual customers within a movement leg.

What do they have in common?

Shared characteristics across a group: tenure, plan, segment.

Comparing periods

Ask

Returns

How does February compare to January?

Both periods side by side, with the differences stated.

How does this compare to the last three months?

The period against a trailing average.

Show me the last six months

A series, on a consistent basis.

Reading the month

Ask

Returns

Why is February different from January?

A variance read: what moved, who drove it, and how much of the change each driver explains.

Prep the brief for my review

The close summarised into a reviewable brief: the headline, the movement, and what needs attention.

These two figures do not agree. What is going on?

The procedure for what does not add up: which records conflict, what can be established, and what needs your call.

Ratios

Ask

Returns

What is my net revenue retention?

The ratio, with the basis it was computed on.

What is my revenue churn rate?

Revenue lost as a share of the opening balance.

Retention ratios require the recurring revenue basis. See Retention and churn.

About your data

Ask

Returns

What periods does my file cover?

The full date range found, and the latest closeable period.

Which columns can I break down by?

The columns available as a segment lens.

What did I choose for this file?

The column mapping, classification and basis in force.

What is still unresolved?

Open exceptions and recorded assumptions affecting this close.

I export from Stripe. What should I pull?

A walkthrough of which Stripe export to use and what has to be in it.

What Morevy will not answer

Morevy reports on the data you supplied. It does not:

  • Explain commercial cause. It will name the customers and segments behind a movement. It will not tell you why someone paid less or stopped paying - a billing export records what happened, not the reason for it.

  • Forecast. No close figure is ever a prediction. A forward view exists only as the separate scenario model you can ask it to build, whose assumptions are dials you set.

  • Advise. It will tell you that a segment lost revenue. It will not tell you to change your pricing.

  • Answer from outside your file. It has no information about businesses other than yours. It may name a commonly cited benchmark, but it never grades your business against one.

  • Produce a figure it cannot compute. Where no verified result exists, it says so rather than estimating.

Note. Every answer is a computation against your file, not a summary of what is already on screen. Asking the same question twice after changing an input produces a new result, and when the figures moved, a statement of what moved; when they did not, it recomputes without commentary.
